A tragic sightseeing tour ended in disaster Thursday afternoon when a helicopter plunged into the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey, killing all five people on board.
Among the victims were Agustin Escobar, President and CEO of Siemens Spain, his wife, and their three children, city officials confirmed. The family had been visiting New York on holiday.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter spiral uncontrollably before crashing upside down into the river. Debris was seen floating on the surface as bystanders watched in shock. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but all passengers, including the pilot, were pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams during a press briefing Thursday evening. “Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Agustin Escobar and his family, as well as the pilot. We will do everything we can to support the investigation and offer comfort to the affected families.”
The helicopter was reportedly operated by a local tour company offering aerial views of Manhattan. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the crash.
Siemens AG issued a statement early Friday, expressing profound sorrow at the loss of Escobar, who had served in executive roles within the company for over two decades.
