On March 8, 2025, the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 Ambassadorial Assembly’s Women and Gender Committee hosted a transformative virtual event in honor of International Women’s Day. This gathering brought together influential leaders and change-makers dedicated to advancing women’s empowerment across Africa.

International Women’s Day Celebration

The event featured a series of insightful discussions and workshops aimed at addressing key challenges and opportunities for African women. Topics ranged from financial and economic inclusion to leadership development and health initiatives, aligning with the AU’s broader goals of sustainable development and gender equality as outlined in Agenda 2063.

Upcoming Empowerment Event on March 29, 2025

Building on the momentum of International Women’s Day, the Women and Gender Committee is organizing an in-person empowerment event on March 29, 2025, in Lagos, Nigeria. This initiative aims to empower 300 women, including market women, street vendors, and small-scale entrepreneurs, with:
    •    Entrepreneurial training and skill development
    •    Financial literacy sessions
    •    Free health screenings, including cancer checks
    •    Business startup support

This event reflects the committee’s commitment to equipping African women with the tools they need to thrive, thereby contributing to the continent’s socio-economic development.

Collaborative Vision for Women’s Empowerment

The Women and Gender Committee is actively collaborating with various AU bodies to ensure a holistic approach to women’s empowerment:
    •    Trade and Investment Committee: Enhancing women’s participation in trade and investment opportunities.
    •    Education and Mass Literacy Committee: Promoting access to quality education for women and girls.
    •    Tourism Committee: Encouraging women’s involvement in the tourism sector.
    •    Media and Communications Committee: Amplifying women’s voices and representation in media.
    •    Finance Committee: Improving women’s access to financial services and resources.

By working hand in hand with the chairpersons of these committees, the Women and Gender Committee aims to create an environment where African women can thrive, leading to a prosperous and equitable continent.
