Corps Commander/Chief Executive Officer of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Dr Olaseni Ogunyemi has reaffirmed the agency’s stand to prosecute vehicle owners and drivers caught flouting traffic rules in the state.
He warned road users especially the drivers to abide by all the traffic rules and regulations as the rushing hours of ember months is around the corner.
Cdr Ogunyemi explained that ember months are characterized by heightened vehicular movement across the roads which results in the loss of lives and properties as a result of motor accidents.
He disclosed this as a reaction to multiple road traffic crashes on different locations which nearly turned Nigeria’s Independence Day, 2024 to a black day in the state.
The road traffic management expert frowned at rate with which accident keeps on increasing instead of reducing despite public enlightenment and enforcement in the state.
The RTCs, he explained occurred in different locations within the state and it left one person killed while several others sustained various degree of injuries.
Above mentioned locations include Car Park C on Lagos – Ibadan Expressway; Ago-Oba, Enugada; CBN junction, IBB Boulevard and Obada-Oko in Abeokuta, the state capital. Others, he added occurred in Idedo in Atan along Ota-Idiroko expressway and Mowe on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
He said the causes of the crashes was not far from excessive speed, overloading, route violation (one way drive), driving mechanical unbalanced vehicle on the road, obstruction, drunk driving, aggressiveness, fatigue, use of worn out tyres, among others.
“Excessive speed, overloading, one-way driving, drunk driving, have been the major factors causing accidents on the roads. Speeding causes drivers not to have firm control over the vehicle while in motion thereby increasing the risk of being involved in traffic crash while Overloading creates an imbalance on the vehicle when in motion and this exerts maximum pressure on the vehicle tyres.”
He noted that TRACE will continue intensify efforts towards Road traffic crash reduction through massive campaign against violation of traffic rules and maintainance good road use ethics.
“I advised general road users, being motorists, motorcyclists, tricyclists and pedestrians to always observe and abide by traffic rules and regulations to achieve a hitch-free Ember Months,” Dr Ogunyemi, added.
The TRACE Boss, warned highway refuse parkers, popularly known as road refuse managers and road construction companies to desist from route violation (one-way drive), saying they should contact road traffic managers should the need arise. “TRACE will continue to have zero tolerance for indiscipline that could cause RTC and anyone caught violating traffic rules would made to face the wrath of law”
