Mismanagement of Edo State Funds and the Dire Consequences of Electing Asue Ighodalo- APC

Date: July 25, 2024

The APC New Media Directorate is deeply alarmed by the recent revelations of egregious financial mismanagement by the Edo State government under Governor Godwin Obaseki. An examination of the state’s budget performance documents has uncovered scandalous expenditures that betray the trust and welfare of the Edo people.

In a shocking display of fiscal irresponsibility, the state government spent an astounding N1.1 billion on furniture and fittings within the first quarter of 2024. This is out of a total budget of N2.2 billion for the entire year. Simultaneously, the government allocated N203 million on refreshment and meals within the same period, with a total of N739 million earmarked for such expenditures for the year.

Meanwhile, critical sectors have been woefully neglected. The Ministry of Water Resources, which had an initial budget of N1.030 billion, received no capital expenditure. Only N5 million was allocated to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, and no funds were spent on the vital erosion, flood, and watershed management agency.

These revelations highlight a blatant disregard for the essential needs and priorities of the Edo people. The extravagant spending on non-essential items, while vital services and infrastructure projects are ignored, is a clear indication of misplaced priorities and mismanagement.

Moreover, there are increasing concerns and suggestions that these misappropriated funds, along with other revenue allocations, might be redirected to back the candidacy of the PDP's gubernatorial candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

This potential misuse of public resources for political campaigns is not only unethical but also illegal. We call upon the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate these expenditures thoroughly and ensure accountability.

Edo people must be vigilant and discerning in their voting decisions. The current administration’s actions clearly demonstrate a lack of commitment to the development and prosperity of our state. Electing Asue Ighodalo, who is closely associated with this administration, would only perpetuate and exacerbate these issues.

Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy represents a continuation of wasteful priorities and financial mismanagement. Given his association with the current administration, it is reasonable to expect that he would be even worse than Governor Obaseki in squandering public funds on frivolous expenses while neglecting critical needs.

The APC New Media Campaign Council urges all Edo citizens to reject Asue Ighodalo and the continuation of failed policies and mismanagement. We deserve leaders who prioritize the welfare of the people, manage resources prudently, and focus on the development and prosperity of Edo State.

Signed,

Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah

Director, APC New Media Edo 2024 Gubernatorial Campaign Council
