The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has stated his trial for alleged money laundering charges turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him, reports thegazellenews.com

The former Speaker stated that though the last twelve and half years of his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as harrowing experience for him and his family, he was able to pick a positive out of it because the trial period afforded him the opportunity to enrol for a law course at the University of Lagos, and today he is a qualified lawyer.

The ex-Lagos Assembly Speaker spoke on Wednesday, 26 June, 2024 during a chat with journalists in Lagos.

“As a firm believer in God, I’ve always believe that there are two sides to any event, both positive and negative. At the end of the day, my ordeal turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I was able to enrol for my law degree course at the University of Lagos and today I’m a qualified lawyer,” Rt Honourable Ikuforiji said.

The former Speaker was discharged and acquitted from the 54-count charge levelled against him by the EFCC at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, 24 June, 2024.

Ikuforiji however stated that even though the petition on which he was investigated, prosecuted and discharged was a frivolous one, he would not press charges against the anti-graft agency.

He lamented how he was made to go through a court case for twelve and half years over a petition written by fictitious people with no address or telephone numbers.

He disclosed that the operatives of the EFCC combed the House of Assembly for months and checked through all the papers without finding anything indicting him.

On whether he has left politics, the former lawmaker noted that despite his experience, he has never left politics.

“I still play politics and participate fully in political activities. The only thing I didn’t do was to stand for election which is not proper for someone being prosecuted,” he said.
