NAFDAC has come to the defense of Nestle, the world’s largest consumer goods company, stating that the company has not violated any regulations in the composition of its infant milk product.
This response was prompted by an online report alleging that Nestle adds sugar and honey to infant milk and cereal products sold in poorer countries, contrary to international guidelines aimed at preventing obesity and chronic diseases.
NAFDAC clarified that the addition of sucrose, fructose, glucose, glucose syrup, or honey is permitted in national and international food standards, as long as it does not exceed the prescribed maximum levels.
The Agency emphasized that processed cereal-based foods for infants and young children can contain these added carbohydrates, provided they adhere to specific limits.
NAFDAC reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of infant and young children foods sold in Nigeria.
In a detailed response, NAFDAC addressed the specific standards and regulations governing infant and young children foods, highlighting the importance of optimal nutrition during infancy and early childhood.
The Agency also clarified that the Nido follow-up milk formula mentioned in the report is not registered in Nigeria and not in circulation in the country.
