HOW GOOGLE MAP MISLED DRIVER INTO POLICE NET...begs for pardon

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has told a driver to face the law for violating traffic rules while being led by Google Maps on Saturday night.

The driver, Oyiga Michael, had cried out on social media that he was arrested by the police at Ijesha while trying to locate his way home using the Google Map app as a guide.

“Immediately we got to the turn to Ijesha, they (police) said we were following one way and were threatening to deflate our tyre.

“We have explained and explained and they don’t even want to hear as it was the map that was misleading and they’ve been threatening to beat us as well. We don’t have any money extra as we are coming from a wedding,” he said.

Michael disclosed that he was released, but his car was impounded by the police at the Cele Police Station, adding that the police said “We should bring 30,000 Naira.

“We don’t have any money to go home and we also don’t have any money to bribe and can’t leave the car here as well.”

As the driver was seeking help on X, the Lagos PPRO, Hundeyin reacted, saying, “Ignorance is not an excuse under the law. Google Maps is equally not an excuse. Stay calm and let the law take its course.”

Hundeyin maintained that police are not the ones to erect road signs, stressing that, “We are law enforcement officers, not lawmakers. We enforce the law made by the people.”

On the allegation that the policemen demanded N30,000 to free Michael, Hundeyin said, “They must not pay the bribe. It is an offence to give a bribe. It is, however, very okay to pay a fine. And that would be in court, not a police station.”

Michael admitted “It was a mistake from our end and we have perfectly learnt our lesson, sir. It won’t happen again as we understand perfectly how to navigate road junctions and use lanes on maps. I pray they tamper Justice with mercy.”

On Sunday morning, he posted, ”Thank you everybody for reaching out. I am fine. I was not detained, and neither was I harmed. Although our car is still at the station. We are asked to come back on Monday. Hopefully, they can forgive us and we can get it back.”

BVN, NIN: Sanction Banks, Not Customers, Expert Urges CBN

A financial expert, Mr Okechukwu Unegbu, has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to sanction banks that allow customers to operate accounts without their BVN and NIN.

Unegbu, a past president of the Chattered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

He spoke against the backdrop of the recent directive by the apex bank to freeze all bank accounts without a Bank Verification Number and National Identification Number from April, 2024.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the directive was contained in a recent circular issued by the CBN to all Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).

The circular was jointly signed by the Directors, Payments System Management Department, Chibuzo Efobi, and Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustapha.

The apex bank also directed that all the BVN or NIN associated with all accounts/wallets must be electronically revalidated by January 31, 2024.

It said the directive was part of efforts to promote financial system stability and strengthen the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures in all financial institutions.

According to Unegbu, the apex bank should spare the account holders and impose heavy sanctions on the DMBs.

“It is the fault of the DMBs; instead of punishing the customers, the CBN should sanction the banks heavily.

“They were instructed to ensure that every account holder had the BVN and NIN, but they failed to comply because of the greed to have deposits,” he said.

Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday, took on the National President of Miyetti Allah, Kautal Hore, Abdullahi Bello Bodejo, for dismissing his recent quit notice to Fulani herders to vacate the Southwest.

He said the nation’s constitution does not support mindless killings of farmers, vicious rape of their wives and destruction of farmlands, which were rampant during the immediate past administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that President Bola Tinubu will not tolerate such unwholesome developments.

Apparently reacting to a report credited to Bodejo in the media, Adeyemo contended that “some alleged killer Fulani herders must be stopped from re-igniting tension and atmosphere of insecurity in any part of Nigeria, most especially in the agrarian communities and settlements in Yorubaland by the security agencies.”

Describing the national president of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, as a “mere attention seeker, he emphasised that though Nigeria’s Constitution allows citizens to reside in any part of the country, it does not support herders under whatever guise to graze his cattle on the farmlands, kill farmers struggling to eke their living and rape their wives and daughters.”

In a personally signed statement forwarded to journalists, Adeyemo said: “It is glaring that Bodejo is merely seeking undue recognition through his unjustifiable position on the carnage by his fellow Fulani herders which had caused untold hardship for small and large scale farmers, even in the North and more prominently in the South, where they often move their cattle to graze farms and destroy cash crops.”

The statement reads: “It is imperative for the Miyetti Allah group to be conscious of the fact that the acts of lawlessness permeated by former President Muhammadu Buhari will not hold sway under the immediate incumbent President Bola Tinubu.”

“It will do them a lot of good to perish the thought of unprovoked attacks on farmers, particularly in the South West, where we have lost many innocent farmers. Relevant security agencies and the people will not allow them to further compound the woes of the common man.”

“We are again charging the heads of security agencies to redouble their efforts and strategies in ensuring that the sustenance of peace and tranquility in all parts of the country, including all the states in the South West so that farmers and agrarian communities will not be subjected to terror and violent attacks by rogue Fulani herders and cattle rustlers.”

“While we believe in the efficiency of the Police, the Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other paramilitary agencies to ensure security of lives and properties, we want to charge our people to be vigilant and quickly report any act capable of breaching the peace in their respective communities and locations,” the statement concluded.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, said he is not a beneficiary of the Federal Government’s reinstatement of Integrated Logistic Services Nigeria Limited boat pilotage monitoring business.

Nigerian Ports Authority, in a letter by Port Manager Charles Okaga dated November 30 addressed to all shipping companies, announced the reinstatement of Intels as the Authority’s service boat operation monitoring provider in the pilotage districts.

The letter read in part, “This is to kindly inform you that sequel to the Presidential Directives dated 18th August 2023 and the consent Judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos dated 21st of September 2023, the Authority has extended the Service Boat Operation Contract between it and Intels Nigeria Limited.

“Further to the above and to support the Authority’s and Federal Government’s drive to increase revenue generation from the Service Boat Operations, Messrs. Intels Nigeria Limited has been directed to resume services immediately. This is in line with the terms of the extended contract contained in the Managing Agency Agreement conveying the scope of Services, in addition to the obligations of the Agent.”

A few Nigerians alleged that President Bola Tinubu had reinstated the Former Vice President’s business in Intel.

Atiku, who debunked this in a statement via his official Facebook page on Sunday, explained that he sold his shares in Intel in January 2021 to Orlean Investment Group, the parent company of Intels.

The former vice president added, “The phased sale of those shares that commenced in 2018 peaked in December 2020. Intels also made public my exit from the oil and gas logistics company, meaning that a different entity now owns those shares I sold.

He revealed, “My divestment from the company that I co-founded has not been reversed. Consequently, I cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be a beneficiary of the reinstatement of the boat pilotage monitoring business that was taken away from Intels by the Federal Government.

Atiku described the insinuation that his a beneficiary of the decision to rescind the cancellation of the contract between Intels and the Federal Government as untrue and mischievous.
