Going by the rate at which kidney disease claims the lives of many Nigerians calls for the urgent creation of deliberate awareness that will call the government's attention to this threat. This statement, MAILING DAILY gathered, was made public on September 24, 2023, at the unveiling of the OLUWAFUNMILAYO AKAPO KIDNEY DISEASES AWARENESS FOUNDATION.
The Oluwafunmilayo Akapo Kidney Awareness Foundation is the brainchild of Mr. Olasunkanmi Akapo, who lost his 31-year-old wife on Sunday, September 17, 2023, to kidney disease being unable to raise the humongous amount required for his deceased wife, Mrs. Funmilayo Akapo, to undergo a kidney transplant abroad.
Mr. Olasunkanmi Akapo stated that he has decided to establish the foundation in memory of his late wife, who died as a result of kidney disease. He said throughout the period his wife was on the sick bed, she held on so strong and bravely, and she continued to remind him that many people, knowingly or unknowingly, were helplessly dying of the same situation. Mr. Akapo announced that following the demise of his wife, he decided to address, in his own capacity, the worries of his late wife before she passed on.
He said. "Creating a greater awareness of the causes of kidney diseases, especially in the area of prevention from some health conditions that can put one at risk for kidney disease, could go a long way in curbing the pandemic of this killer disease".
The well-attended program, which was held via the Zoom platform, had distinguished nephrologist Dr. Ibiyemi M.P.E. from Kwara State General Hospital, Ilorin, as the keynote speaker. In her speech, Dr. Ibiyemi highlighted that it is difficult to track the cause of kidney disease since the vulnerability has not been scientifically linked to any precise cause(s).
She explained further. "Since my years of dealing with the diagnosis and management of kidney disease, I have diagnosed people with kidney disease who have never smoked, taken alcohol, or suffered from high blood pressure, hypertension, obesity, and several other conditions that are usually associated with kidney disease; therefore, the certainty of prevention is not guaranteed".
She appealed to the Nigerian government to embark on an aggressive transformation and calibration of the health sector such that kidney transplants would be done in Nigeria. "Rather than making efforts to prevent contracting kidney disease, which I have earlier said can be very difficult because there is no definite cause(s) associated with kidney disease, to save many lives that are lost daily in kidney-related crises, the Nigerian government should focus on providing the requisite facilities and equipment that can aid kidney transplantation in Nigeria."
"Kidney transplantation is capital intensive and cannot be afforded by low- and middle-class people, hence the need for the government’s intervention to locally carry out the surgery, but this would require providing the health centers with requisite equipment and facilities".
While responding to some questions from the audience, Dr. Ibiyemi highlighted a series of symptoms of kidney disease, which include but are not limited to vomiting, swelling of the face, high blood pressure, and the fact that diabetes patients have a higher tendency to contract the disease, etc., but worried that these symptoms are commonly known at the stage when the kidney disease has become chronic.
She urged people to frequently go for urinalysis, a type of test that costs about one thousand naira and can assess, screen, and monitor health conditions, including kidney problems".
The anchor of the program, Azeem Salako, hinted that, though one thousand naira to conduct a urinalysis test might look cheap, millions of people cannot afford it or have no proper orientation of where to go. For this reason, the Oluwafunmilayo Akapo Kidney Awareness Foundation can take it upon itself to conduct free urinalysis tests in addition to other forms of awareness it will adopt in its activities.
In his vote of thanks, the founder of the NGO, Mr. Olasunkanmi Akapo, appreciated the people who attended the virtual program and those who, for some reason, could not. He appealed to friends, family, and the entire public to support his dream of giving his late wife a legacy that he was assured she would be happy to be remembered for. “The foundation would welcome any form of support that would promote and assist in delivering its mandate”, he concluded.
The event had in attendance the families of the deceased and their husbands, their friends, and sympathizers. We pray that the Almighty God will forgive the sins of the departed soul and grant the families she left behind the fortitude to bear their irreplaceable loss.
