In its bid to combat the attrocities of some drivers driving ambulance and hearses, the national body of the profession, Ambulance and Hearse Operators Association of Nigeria (AHOAN) has set up a task force to go after the unregistered members in ensuring pure sanity on all operations.
The task force, according to the Association’s National Coordinator, Comrade Caroline Iheanachor, would mount a comprehensive attack to reduce the high level of illegal activities of the unregistered operators and drivers.
She said the task force would operate in collaboration with Police and other security personnels to examining the requirements of the association from any driver driving ambulance and hearses while on the road and at burial sites, saying anyone caught floating the association's guiding rules would definitely made to face the music.
Among the association's requirements from any driver caught driving ambulances and hearses on the road, according to Comrade Iheanachor, include: Ambulance and Hearse/Revolving Light Clearance, Operational Permit Clearance, Membership Identity Card duly signed and stamped by the National Coordinator.
She noted that this initiative is highly imperative as many of the drivers derived joy in using unauthorised/commercial vehicles to conveyed the sick persons to hospitals and dead bodies to burial sites without minding that it contributed immensely in the spreading of deadly diseases.
She added that many of the operators have in the recent time arrested for using the ambulance and hearse in contrary to the guiding rules and regulations.
Comrade Iheanachor, stressed the need for lawmakers, security agencies in supporting the association's battle ready against the illegal operations of the operators.
Recalled that the Nigeria Police through the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who is now Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 2, Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, pledged maximum support for the association in ensuring the attrocities of the operators come to an end.
He said police would never relent from supporting every move that could put an end to criminal activities in the state and Nigeria at large, saying it is the duty of police to support every battle against criminal activities in the society.
AIG Alabi, then was represented by the Lagos DCP in charge of Administration Bassey Ewa, in a meeting with the association's national executives at Lagos Command. He admonished the association's task force to always give police a useful information that would enable Police act effectively. "Police are not witch or wizard but their operations based on useful and vital informations," he added.
