Hunger Looms As Sleet Destroys Over 300 Farmlands In Katsina

The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA) says it has officially received a report of a downpour accompanied by ice pellets, which has destroyed over 300 farmlands in Kafur Local Government Area of the state.


The Public Relations Officer of the Agency, Umar Muhammed who confirmed the development, said the agency has taken immediate note of the incident and will visit the area for first-hand information.

He said the agency will do the needful for the affected communities, to alleviate the hardship being accompanied by the development.

The Chairman of Kafur Local Government Area in Katsina State, Garba Kanya, has also confirmed that the incident which occurred Sunday night, lasted for over three hours, and affected farms and houses in Dutsen-Kura, Kanya and Gozaki Wards.

He listed the affected communities to include: Gidan Sabo, Kabalawa, Unguwar Tsamiya, Dandabo, Unguwar Maigarma, Unguwar Danwada, Unguwar Wanzamai and Unguwar Fulani.

Kanya also added that several crops, mostly Maize, Millet, Rice, Soya-beans and Pepper were destroyed, putting the costs at millions of Naira.

He said after the incident, he, in the company of some officials of the council and the District Head of Kafur, Abdulrahman Rabe, went to sympathize with the people.

He urged the people to take the incident in good faith, and seek God’s intervention.
