The Corps Commander/CEO, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, 'Seni Ogunyemi, has expressed worries and concerns over incessant road crashes in the state since the beginning of the 'ember months'.
Speaking in a telephone interview with globalreport.com.ng on Thursday, Cdr Ogunyemi lamented that most of the crashes occurring in quick successions in the last few days were caused by reckless driving of the drivers involved.
He stressed that a number of the drivers are recalcitrant who knew the right things to do behind wheels, but flaunts safety regulations to their peril and those of hapless road users.
According to Cdr Ogunyemi, "Our agency have resolved to, henceforth and throughout the 'ember months' begin the quick prosecution of traffic safety offenders, which is aimed to reduce the number of road safety offenders before they progress into crashing their vehicles on our roads.
"In the last few months, we carried out expansive and far reaching public education, enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns which is expected to guide the motoring public on the need to obey all road safety regulations, especially on the aspects of reckless driving, reckless overtaking, excessive load and excessive speeding, expired tyre usage, drunk driving, which are some of the leading causes of road crashes, " he added.
Cdr. Ogunyemi regrettably enumerated the following as some of the crashes that occurred in the state within the week:
"You can imagine, on Monday we recorded a lone accident along Redeemed Ogijo/Sagamu Road, while on Tuesday, at Ifo, there was another accident involving a Sienna car and a commercial motorcycle, known as Okada.
"On same Tuesday, at Judiciary Complex, Kobape, Abeokuta, another accident which killed one person occurred when a truck and a Jeep Rav 4, had a head-on collision.
"As if that was not enough, on same Tuesday reckless driving led to another accident when a Mack truck and Caster were involved in an accident at Kara Bridge Lagos - Ibadan Express.
"Still in this week, on Wednesday, no fewer than six people were crushed to death when a tanker fell on a commercial tricycle, (Marwa) and an Okada on Iju Bridge along Idiroko-Ota International Road. The victims who were on their way to a wedding party never reached there.
"On the same Wednesday, in Ijebu-Ode, we recorded another fatal accident in which three people were killed in another accident involving a truck and a commercial motorcycle (Okada).
"It was discovered that the victims, Okada rider, mother and child were on a commercial motorcycle when, unfortunately met their untimely death.
"The said motorcycle was hooked underneath the truck, the situation which attracted street urchins (Area Boys) who attempted, in vain, to burn the truck but for the quick intervention of the security agents.
"But the drivers was badly injured and handed over to Igbeba police MTD Igbeba for further investigation and the truck towed Igbeba MTD too", he said.
