The Council of Maritime Truck Unions and Association (COMTUA), yesterday, said the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) are responsible for extortion and creating of illegal checkpoints on the port access road.
In a press statement made available to BUSINESSINSIDERNG, the national president, COMTUA, Com. Adeyinka Aroyewun, said the Lagos state government cannot ban millitary checkpoints already dismantled by the Presidential Task Team (PTT).
Aroyewun said since the disolution of the PTT, there has been no Military checkpoints on any part of the areas mentioned by the Special Adviser to The Governor on Transportation, Hon Toyin Fayinka till now, rather, checkpoints created by LASTMA, RTEAN among others.
He said, “the attention of COMTUA has been drawn to the publication by Lagos state government, through the Special Adviser to The Governor on Transportation, Hon Toyin Fayinka and we wish to state as follows, “That since the establishment of the presidential Task Team, there has been no Military checkpoints on any part of the mentioned areas till now.”
“That the extortion point on the mentioned corridor is mainly operated by LASTMA, RTEAN, Area boys, NPA and other proxies of the Lagos state committee on Apapa headed by Hon Toyin Fayinka.
“That the usurpation of powers and authority by the Hon Toyin Fayinka on the corridor is also a source of extortion through the Agency on Abandoned vehicles’ illegal operation and that the said stakeholders meeting held at the instance of Hon Toyin Fayinka, on Easter Monday is a charade aimed at misleading the general public and to cover up for his atrocities against truckers.”
He, however, disclosed that the Lagos state government and it’s transportation ministry have failed in returning sanity to the port access road.
“I want to draw the attention of government and the general public to the failure of the Lagos State on Apapa/ Tincan corridor that, Hon Toyin Fayinka and his committee members has failed to produce a white paper to the police and the general public on the ban on collection by unions on the road as directed by the governor.
“That the imposition of substandard garages on truckers by the Lagos state ministry of Transport in connivance with NPA is an extortion part on its own. A case study of ABAT in Orile.
*The activities of the agency on Abandoned vehicles without any avenue for redress is more of extortion than any other. A case where driven vehicles are fined for towing and moving vehicles hijacked and called Abandoned. “
“This is most embarrassing, especially when Hon Toyin Fayinka confirmed that the governor directed that every vehicle arrested for violation must pay a hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) for towing even when driven. I challenge Hon Toyin Fayinka to mention the stakeholders at the meeting and the criteria for their invitation.”
“Enough of this deceit and cover-ups.
The Port Standing Task Team set up by the presidency is intending to arrest illegality of the Logistics ring however, misleading press release is aimed at frustrating the good work of the Committee.”
