The Ogun State Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists on reckless driving while behind the wheel.
Its Sector Commander, CC Ahmed Umar, attributed the number of crashes recorded within the festive period with high fatality rate to excessive speed, route violation, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking and loss of control, among other factors.
He said these are offences categorised or best described under human factors and they are life threatening offences which could be avoidable if traffic rules and regulations are observed.
CC Umar disclosed this as a reactions to the multiple auto traffic crash that claimed seven peoples’ lives while 12 others suffered varying degrees of injuries on Monday at Kere village, along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ewekoro axis in Ogun State.
The accident, INFORMATION CARRIER, gathered involved three vehicles – two commercial buses with registration numbers LSR 266 YD and LND 01 YE respectively while other vehicle Cabster bore XS 595 JJJ.
The fatal accident occourred as result of over-speeding recklessly and lane violation.
It was further learnt that the two Mazda commercial buses that were already on top speed while travelling to Abeokuta, the state capital, lost controls and collided with the Cabster van when the driver was driving against traffic.
“The driver of the Cabster van drove against traffic while the drivers of the Mazda commercial buses were speeding,” an eyewitness said.
The seven who died, it was further learnt comprised of four male adults, one female adult, one female child and one male child.
While 12 injured, consisted of seven male adults, four female adults and one female child.
The Injured victims were taken to General Hospital, Ijaiye and Federal Medical Centre Idi Aba both in Abeokuta, and the corpses were also deposited at morgue of General Hospital, Ijaiye by the operatives of the FRSC.
CC Umar, while commiserating with the victims’ families, advised the motoring public to drive defensively, maintain safe speed and obey traffic rules and regulations.
He said FRSC would always committed to creating a safer motoring environment, saying any motorist apprehended flouting traffic rules would be punished in line with the extant laws.
