…Decries worrisome the high rate of road traffic crashes despite rigorous road safety enlightenment
By OLALEKAN AYENI – The Sagamu Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has its 2021 ember months campaign with a call on motorists to avoid over-speeding, night travels and overloading.
The event began with road show, distribution of fliers written with major languages – English, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo was held at Kara Motor Parks, Sagamu, in Ogun State. Scores of transport stakeholders, drivers and other road users benefitted from the health screening organised as part of activities for the glorious event.
Speaking at the event, its Unit Commander, ACC, Taofiq Iyanda, said ember months road safety campaign with the theme; ‘Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience’ was aimed at reducing fatalities as the period was normally characterized with increased in both human and vehicular movements.
“The 2021 ember months campaign with the theme ‘Maintain Safety Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience’ is aimed at making our roads safe for the public,” he said.
He decried worrisome as road traffic crashes increasing despite public enlightenment on safety rules and regulations guiding the use of roads.
ACC Iyanda said no fewer than
46 have died in 122 crashes just on Sagamu axis from January to date.
He explained further that 289 persons sustained various degrees of injuries while 392 were also rescued unhurt from the 122 crashes under the period reviewed.
ACC Iyanda unit Commander attributed most of the traffic crashes to overspeed, overloading, drunk driving and dangerous overtaking. He discouraged night travelling because of antecedent risks attached.
He stressed the need for enforcement of traffic rules and robust public enlightment against traffic infractions to stem cases of accident during, before and after the ember months, while enjoining motorists to maintain safe speed and shun night traveling to enjoyed quality road experience.
ACC Iyanda advised motorists to drive with caution, embark on defensive driving cultures and cooperate with traffic
management while approaching the road construction zones.
Earlier, the FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, CC Ahmed Umar, cautioned motorists against dangerous driving and all form of distractions such as use of mobile phone, unnecessary arguments while driving.
CC Umar was represented by the Sector Logistics Officer, Deputy Corps Commander (DCC) Gbadebo Adeniyi, also urged motorists to desist from excessive speeding and night traveling wrongful overtaking especially at sharp corner to prevent mishaps on highways.
