The Itori Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised the motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and shun inappropriate use of the roads to stem crashes during the ember months.
The Itori Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Shamaki Yerima, gave the advice during the 2021 inauguration campaign on Thursday, at the new garage, Ilaro, Ogun.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign as its theme: “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience.”
According to him, the campaign was aimed at reducing fatal crashes during the period, usually characterised by increased human and vehicular movement.
Yerima added that the theme of the campaign was to sensitise the motoring public of the dangers inherent in the inappropriate use of the road.
“It has been observed that most of the road traffic crashes are traced to speeding and speed related factors.
“In addition, motorists often engage in traffic violations such as overloading, speeding, use of phones while driving, drug abuse and night travel in an attempt to make more money, especially during this period,” he said.
The commander enjoined motorists to refrain from night travels, observe all traffic regulations and maintain safe speed in order to minimise road crashes during the period.
He advised commercial vehicle owners to install speed limiting device so as to help drivers maintain safe speed at all times.
He also urged transporters to continue to observe all the COVID-19 protocols so as to further reduce spread of the pandemic in the country.
Also speaking, Mr Frank Mbana, the Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, Ilaro Area Command, said drug abuse was the major cause of road accidents in the country.
Mbana described drugs or intoxicating substances as any chemical substance taken into the body system which altered the behaviours or actions of people, thus sometimes leading to crashes.
“To avoid accidents on our highways, the drivers must shun and stay away from the use of drugs,” he said.
Mrs Modupe Olugbenga, the Head of Vehicles Inspection Office (VIO), Ilaro, warned against speeding to prevent mishaps during the ember months.
Olugbenga noted that most of the crashes occurred at night rather than during the day, urging motorists against night traveling
She also advised motorists to desist from night traveling due to the security challenges confronting the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
