Ogun: NANS fires Showunmi for comparing Gov Abiodun to Level 13 civil servant

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogun State has reacted to a statement credited to a former aide of Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, that Governor Dapo Abiodun was running Ogun State like a Level 13 civil servant.

While the students said they would not love to dabble into politics, they accused Showunmi of denigrating the hard labour of workers in the State, saying “when criticism comes as a commercial venture in order to unscrupulously receive gratification, then it must be rebutted instantly.”

Describing Segun Showunmi as a “serial rabble-rouser whose uncultured and uninformed utterances have gathered undue attention in the media,” the students maintained that “only an irresponsible adult will denigrate the hard labour of indispensable civil servants by insinuating that they are senseless.” null

“Coming from a supposed elder statesman who has enjoyed all his life, the largesse derived from the toilings of civil servants in form of dividends of democracy, the statement is not only preposterous and unbecoming, it also points towards amnesia,” it was said.

According to a statement made available to DAILY POST on Saturday, Ogun NANS Chairman, Damilola Simeon, stressed that they would remind their civil servant parents of the “monumental insult” whenever Showunmi appears to seek their votes. https://137e342cea11140cee6b75f76b0657fa.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

“A wise man once said that, ‘He who must come to equity, must come with clean hands’. Therefore, if anyone must criticise the government, it should not be Segun Showunmi who has a record of speaking from both sides of his mouth.

“This is because constructive criticism is a fundamental feature of democracy and must not be tainted by people whose intention is to increase their waning relevance and generate unmerited attention.

“At the initial emergence of the present government, Segun Showunmi was a full-time critic until he offered his conscience for a paltry sum of money under the table. https://137e342cea11140cee6b75f76b0657fa.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

“Hon. Segun Showunmi should come out to account for how much exchanged hands to facilitate his media sabbatical leave.

“Even as we emphasise that the utterances are nothing but a drowning man’s attempt to grasp straws, we advise Hon. Segun Showunmi to complete his university degree at the University of Lagos before engaging in a discourse that is clearly out of his league.

“Finally, we hereby call on responsible and dignified individuals who are not political merchants and jobbers to air objective criticism so we can further drive Ogun State forward,” the statement reads.
