The Lagos and Ogun Zonal Commanding Officer of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal Peter Kibo has appealed to road users especially the motorists to adhere strictly to road traffic laws to make the year 2021 ’ember’ months unique and crash-free.
He disclosed this in a reaction to multiple crashes that occurred in early hour of yesterday on Lagos-Ibadan expressway which involved about six vehicles and 13 people.
The accident which resulted to fire outbreak was attributed to reckless driving and over speeding. Though no life was lost, apart from two of the 13 persons that suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
He listed the six vehicles involved in the accident to include a yellow Mitsubishi pickup with registration number XK 725 KTU, a blue Toyota Matrix car, with no registration number and a white Dad Truck marked DBT 212 ZY.
Others are a white Iveco truck marked MAG 30 ZR, a green Howo truck with no registration number, and a green truck with no number.
ACM Kibo declared as worrisome that motorists attributed the accident on the road during the last quarter of the year to demons, adding that no demons awaiting to suck blood on the road, but disobedience to traffic rules and regulations responsible to accident and incidents.
He said the last four months of the year always characterised with high volume of both human and vehicular movements, causing highways to be more congested. Only preventive measure to forestall accidents and incidents during the ember months are driving with lower speed, shunning driving under influence of alcohol/drugs, recklessness, overloading and driving mechanically deficient vehicles on the road, among others
The Zonal Commanding Officer, enjoined motorists to imbibe defensive driving cultures and refrain from excessive speeding and reckless driving that could lead to unnecessary loss of lives while behind the wheel.
He also advised family and friends to “travel in phases, to avoid a cluster of traffic during the ember months”, urging them to always observe all travelling protocols for COVID-19, noting that the enforcement on 50% carrying capacity for all vehicles targeted at creating adequate physical distancing is still in place and the Corps will not spare motorists caught violating these directives.
