The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned fuel laden tankers to stop driving out of the depots without the installation of functioning safety valve in their vehicles.
The RS 2 Zonal Commander, ACM Peter Kibo gave the warning in reactions to the last tanker explosion at the proposed new Kara Market, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway where lives were lost and multi-million naira properties destroyed.
He said safety valve is the only preventive tool designed to prevent fuel laden tankers from spilling their contents on the road should any traffic crash.
ACM Kibo said: "the most dangerous vehicle is tanker loaded with fuel moving on the highway without functioning safety valve. It is a time bomb waiting to explode and when it falls it poses dangers to the public with devastating effects."
He implored tankers owners to ensure their vehicles are in good shape before putting them on the road and also sought more cooperation of depot authorities and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on the enforcement of minimum safety standard of transporting fuel across the country.
He opined that tankers owners are expected to adhere strictly to simple safety measures, noting that safety on the road is a collective responsibility and nothing too much to sacrifice to guarantee safety on the roads.
ACM Kibo explained that FRSC has deployed trained officials to all loading depots to ensure no tanker come out of the depots without proper inspection to ensure road worthiness including the installation of fuel spillage preventive tool (safety valve).
FRSC, being a regimented body saddled with responsibility of making highway safe for users would continue to have zero tolerance to lawlessness wrecking havoc on the road, saying any tanker driver caught floating the rules guiding the transportation of fuel from one place to the other would made to face the wrath of law, ACM Kibo, added.
