Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CC Olusegun Ogungbemide has appeal to motorists within the corridor to engage rigorous driving positive adjustment to ensure safer road by adoption of speed limit of 30km/h in urban and cities for all categories of vehicles.
The disclosure was at the instance of 2021 celebration of the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety Week tagged: "Street for Life" organised by the Lagos Sector Command of FRSC.
The programme schedules which covers many aspects of activities including road show, involving Lagos State Drivers' Institute (LASDRI) and other transportation stakeholders.
In the words of CC Ogunbemide, FRSC being the leading agency in traffic management pointed that speed violation was responsible for about 30 percent of crashes in Nigeria, noting that the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week would focus much on preaching against excess speed while behind the wheel.
He explains that the programme is scheduled to run from 17th to 23rd May 2021 with adequate public enlightenment at religious homes, schools, motor parks,public spaces among others.
The Lagos Safety and Road manager explains further that statistics has shown that most crashes recorded on Lagos Corps corridor were usually products of overspeeding and irresponsible driving, which Informs his slogan of "Speak up" at any untoward character or behaviours of drivers because many of them only sees passengers as Cash (money) and not as any valuable being hence they drives carelessly with impunity on the road.
It is a shocking revelation that global statistics shows 1.3Million people died from crashes globally,a record that shows road accidents as most life-taking incident worldwide before arrival of Covid-19 pandemic the world is yet to recover from till date.
“His words: "Let me begin by saying the faster you are going the more likely you involved in a crash. Crashes at higher speeds cause more severe injuries than those at lower speed. It is expected that the speed limit should not be beyond 30k/h when motorised traffic mixes with pedestrians and cyclists.
"Road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of children and young people between aged of 5 - 29. These death are an unacceptable price to pay for mobility. The small increases in speed result to large increases in crash risk. Speed thrills but the chances of avoiding a collision becomes smaller when at uncontrollable speed," he said.
CC Ogungbemide said FRSC organises this public enlightenment campaign to inculcate the norm of 30km/h speed limits among road users.
He explained that more damage is caused to vehicles involved in speeding when they crash, thereby increasing the likelihood of such vehicles not drivable after a crash.
Sector Commander Ogungbemide, called on general motoring public to always adhere to stipulated maximum speed limit to prevent crashes, its attendant injuries as well as fatalities.
He further stressed the need to avoid excess speed which was considered among the critical traffic violations causing traffic crashes on Nigeria roads.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager, Lagos State Drivers' Institute (LASDRI), Mrs Afusat Abike Tiamiyu has disclosed the readiness of Lagos State Government to support every efforts of traffic managers in eradicating impunities causing gridlocks and accident in the state.
"We expresses our gratitude to FRSC and other road traffic management in efforts of reduce carnage causing gridlocks and traffic crashes in Lagos State. The LASDRI is always willing to partner with the Corps and other relevant road traffic agencies in the corridor to ensure constant safety management of lives and properties," She said.
