Ogun monarch tasks colleagues on dispute resolution skills

 

 

 Going by the yearning of the Aworis modern enlightenement and drives for further control of community dispute resolution and peace sustainance,

Olota of Ota, the ancient city of Aworiland, Oba Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege, has advised traditional rulers across the country to acquire mediation and conciliation skills for effective land dispute resolution at the community level.

He made the call at the mediation skills accreditation and certification training organised in conjunction with Nigeria Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators for other traditional rulers within his territory at his palace in Ota. Themed: "Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)"

The Kabiyesi said land dispute resolution had posed great challenge for most traditional rulers across the country, adding that courts are filled with lots of land and other community related cases lingering for years but training of this "Alternative Dispute Resolution" would help the traditional rulers aquaint themselves the knowledge of settling disputes without court which would further reduce costs of pursuing litigations and time taken to get quality Justice. Through this, every traditional leaders are equiped to sit on cases of community relevance in all their domains.

He urged community heads and traditional rulers to empower themselves with mediation and conciliation skills for effective land dispute resolution, while urging government to organise sandwich trainings and seminars for traditional rulers on basic fundamentals of Alternative Dispute Resolution, saying this would equip them with the right knowledge and skills to maintain peace in their domains.

The training facilitators Mr Olusegun Ogunsannwo and Gbenga Gbarada commends the sitting and described the need to bring conflict resolution training to traditional leaders as gatekeepers of customs and traditions, saying though the task of settling disputes is peculiar to monarchs before now but are just brushing their skills more to get certified in attending to cases at their respective domains.

They said traditional rulers as custodians of culture, heritage and ethos of the people, their intervention in land disputes was bound to promote peace and harmony, stressing that it would also break the circus of enmity among the people, which was inherent in the costly and prolonged judicial process on land disputes.
