Josef Bican was born in 1913 to a Viennese-Czech mother and Czech father, Ludmila Bican and František Bican in Vienna. His growing up was harsh due to the effects of world war One. Upon his retirement in 1955, Josef Bican had an official tally of 805 goals in 530 games in domestic football, and 31 in 44 for Austria and Czechoslovakia on the international stage.
